Beit al Batroun

You leave the coast road just short of Batroun, climb a few minutes through pine and scrub towards Rachana, and the house appears on its terrace with the sea laid out flat and blue below. Colette Kahil spent the better part of a decade making it. The bones are a traditional Lebanese house, pale stone and green shutters, rooms gathered around a tall central liwan under a pointed arch that frames the garden. What fills it, she gathered herself: old doors, wrought-iron grilles, cement tiles in faded patterns, a chest, a mirror, a swing hung on ropes from the beams. Five rooms, named for the trees around them, each different, none of it bought as a set. A French bulldog has the run of the place.

The table

Breakfast is the meal the house is known for, a long spread of Lebanese things laid out on the terrace, labneh and warm bread, za'atar, fruit and jam from the garden's own trees. Dinner is on when you ask for it, cooked in the kitchen and eaten at a shared table rather than served to order. Beyond that you go down the hill to Batroun, an old Phoenician harbour town with good fish and the lemonade it is famous for. That is the shape of it, and it suits the place.

Why it's in VANE

This is not a resort and does not want to be one. There is no lobby, no spa, no front desk. There is a plunge pool set into one corner of the terrace, a garden that runs to the tree line, and the Mediterranean beyond the pines. Five rooms means it books out, dinner needs asking for the day before, and lunch is a drive away in the town. We would not change any of that. It is one of the few places on this coast that feels like a house someone actually lives in, opened to a handful of guests at a time, and the care shows in every salvaged handle and mended tile.
