In the Baix Empordà, a stretch of Catalonia that has kept its medieval villages and its cypresses to itself, an 18th-century farmhouse has been coaxed into a hotel that asks very little of you beyond staying put. That is the whole idea, and it works. Mas de Torrent sits above the hamlet of Torrent, between Pals and Begur, the Costa Brava close enough to reach by the hotel's own boat and far enough that you can forget it for a day. The old mas holds the heart of the place, its stone walls thick, its vaulted rooms cool and low, bougainvillea thrown across the facade in high summer. Around it, single-storey villas in the local vernacular open onto the garden, terracotta underfoot, the Gavarres hills behind. There are fewer than forty rooms and suites in all, which is part of the point. Relais & Châteaux keeps it on its list and the house carries two Michelin Keys, but the register it plays in is quieter than either badge suggests.

The table

El Mas is the kitchen that matters, reading the Empordà through its own produce, the vegetables and the fish and the slow local cooking this corner of Catalonia has always done well. In summer a second table, Las Brasas del Mas, works the grill out in the garden, looser and built for long lunches. The wine country of the Empordà is on the doorstep, and the hotel makes a point of it.

Why it's in VANE

The Costa Brava is a good deal more than its coves, and Mas de Torrent is the argument for that. It is a farmhouse that has learned to recede around you, a garden you raise the shutters onto each morning, a spa of some size when you want it and none of the noise when you don't. Take a room in the old house for the vaults, or a garden villa for the light, and give it the days it asks for.
