Menorca is the Balearic that chose quiet, and Torralbenc is where you go to feel it. A nineteenth-century farm on the rise above the south coast has been kept as a farm in look and turned into a small hotel, low white and ochre buildings among vines, with the island's calm doing most of the work.
The estate is an old Menorcan finca, and the reworking left it looking like one: single-storey agricultural buildings, thick walls, whitewash and the warm ochre the island uses, low to the land rather than reaching over it. The rooms are spread through the farm, pale and plain, the good ones opening to the country and, past it, the sea.
There is a working vineyard on the estate, and the kitchen leans on it and on the rest of the island, the cheese and vegetables and fish that Menorca is quietly good at. It is country cooking made careful, eaten looking out at the land it came from.
It belongs to Menorca in a way the bigger Balearic hotels rarely manage, built into a real farm on an island that has held onto its quiet. It is small, low, and unhurried, and it treats the landscape as the luxury rather than dressing one on top. For quiet, it is hard to better on the island.
