Casa Massina

For years Lake Kerkini was a place you drove to at dawn and left before lunch. You came for the pelicans and the water buffalo, spent a morning with binoculars, and slept somewhere else. Casa Massina is the room that changes that arithmetic, a single apartment in the village above the water, made with an eye careful enough to make you want the night as well as the morning.

I The village

A little Constantinople in the hills

Ano Poroia climbs the lower slopes of Mount Belles, the long ridge that walls off the Bulgarian border above the Serres plain. It is a village of old stone mansions and plane-shaded springs, prosperous once and quietly so still, the kind of place locals will tell you was called a little Constantinople for its houses and its running water. From the higher lanes the view opens south over the reed beds to the lake, flat and pale in the morning, and to the mountains stacked behind it.

Casa Massina sits up here, by the village square, with the water a few minutes downhill and the mountain at its back. That is the first thing it gets right. Almost everything else at Kerkini faces the lake as a car park faces a view. This looks out from a village that was already worth the climb.

The lake was always worth the drive north. It was never, until now, worth the night.

II The making

From carpenter's shop to a single room

The building spent more than thirty years as the village carpentry shop before it was reworked into what it is now, one apartment of some eighty square metres given over to light. Inside it is a single open volume: white walls, a reed ceiling over the kitchen, a daybed set in the sun, a proper run of counter under wooden stools. There is a good deal of real furniture and real art, chief among it a large painting of the lake and its rowers hung above the table, rather than the framed nothing that usually fills a rental. Brass taps stand over a marble bench in the bathroom, patterned cement tiles underfoot. The heat comes up through the floor instead of the obligatory fireplace, which keeps the warmth even and the room uncluttered.

It has its own entrance and a small courtyard, and it sleeps two in earnest. What it reads as is a private home that someone with a careful eye happens to lend you, which is a harder thing to build than a suite, and rarer in this corner of the country than it should be.

III The lake and the table

Pelicans, buffalo and the village table

The reason to be here lies downhill. Lake Kerkini is an artificial reservoir, raised on the Strymonas in 1932 and rebuilt in 1980 over what had been a vast marsh. It is now a national park and a Ramsar wetland, and it holds one of the largest breeding colonies of Dalmatian pelicans in the world, along with the biggest herd of water buffalo left in Greece. In the cold months the pelicans come in low over the flat-bottomed boats by the hundred, and the buffalo stand shoulder-deep in the shallows.

The table follows the water. The same buffalo give a dark, lean meat and a thick yoghurt the tavernas have cooked for generations, set beside lake fish and the long Macedonian tradition of pies. Casa Massina keeps a full kitchen for the days you would rather not move, but the point is to eat in the village and on the shore.

Why it is in VANE comes down to restraint. Kerkini was always a day trip, somewhere you came for a morning and left before dark because there was nowhere worth unpacking a bag. This is the first room that changes the maths, a genuinely well-made space where there was none, with no spa, no concept and no wall of branding. The caveats are the honest kind. It is a single apartment, so it lets to one party at a time; this is a far, quiet corner of the country; and the magic is seasonal, sharpest in the cold months when the birds are in. Come for the morning on the water, not for a minibar.

The reading

Kerkini never lacked for wildlife. What it lacked was a reason to stay the night. Casa Massina supplies one, quietly and without fuss: a single, carefully made room in a village that earns its place, above a lake that does the rest. Come for the cold-weather mornings and the birds, and there are few better addresses on this side of the country.
