The table

Vista

Praia da Rocha · Portimão

A one-star dining room in a 1918 palace on the Praia da Rocha cliffs in Portimão, in the western Algarve, where the Portuguese chef João Oliveira cooks a seafood-led menu from the day's catch off the Algarve coast, and has held the star since 2017.

The cooking

Modern cooking built on the Algarve's own catch and produce. João Oliveira grew up on this coast and works the fish and shellfish landed each day at the ports along it, reading the season rather than a fixed card. The kitchen runs two set routes: a seafood menu drawn from what the boats bring in, with a vegetarian version for those who want it, and Menu Terra, built on organic vegetables from local growers. Olive oil runs through the cooking as a thread of its own, and the provenance of what reaches the plate is mapped out on the table in ceramic pieces that mark where each thing comes from across the region. A chef's table for two sits inside the kitchen, the courses handed straight across the pass. The room is dressed to read like the sea, deep blues and the light off the Atlantic beyond the glass, and service reads the table and adjusts without ceremony.

Why it is in VANE

It holds one Michelin star in the Michelin Guide Portugal 2026, a distinction Oliveira has kept since 2017. That is the case VANE cares about: a Portuguese chef cooking his own coast, the catch off the Algarve ports and the produce of the growers behind it, from a seafront room rather than a borrowed script. The setting earns its keep without carrying the meal, a palace from 1918 on the Praia da Rocha cliffs, and the argument stays the cooking and where it comes from. Oliveira has held the one room for years and keeps it personal, two set menus and a kitchen table, on his own terms. A researched profile, drawn from the restaurant's own record and Michelin's listing, not a first-hand VANE visit.
