Villa Belle Époque

Most people meet Cairo from a high floor, with the Nile laid out below like a map. We prefer it from the ground, under trees. Villa Belle Époque is a 1920s house in Maadi, the garden suburb the city planned along the river from 1907, and it keeps the manners of that period while calling itself Egypt's first boutique hotel.
Maadi was built for shade. Wide streets, old jacarandas, villas set back behind walls, a quiet that central Cairo let go of long ago. The hotel takes one of those houses and does little to correct it. Black shutters on whitewashed walls one side, an ochre-red elevation screened with mashrabiya the other. Inside, the rooms are furnished one at a time, with antiques, patterned cement-tile floors, four-posters under muslin, and the kind of contemporary Egyptian paintings you find yourself studying before breakfast. The garden covers some 1,300 square metres, planted with lemon, olive, mango and guava, and old palms that were here long before any guest. A pool sits in the middle of it. There is a library, and there is time, which is really the point.
The kitchen has a name of its own, Acacia, and it lays tables in three moods: indoors among the panelling, out in the garden, and by the pool once the evening cools. It cooks Egyptian and European in roughly equal measure, the sort of unhurried hotel dining you come back to rather than review. Breakfast under the trees is the meal to keep the morning clear for.
We include it because it runs against the Cairo postcard. There is no pyramid framed from the balcony and no lobby the size of a terminal. What has survived instead is a family-scaled house that held its character through the decades when most of Maadi's villas fell to towers. The pyramids are still there, a drive to the west across the river, and downtown and the Egyptian Museum sit to the north. Spend the day out among all that, then come back to the garden and the quiet, which is the best argument the place makes.
